Why is Access Platform Training Important?

Access platform training is crucial to ensure the safe operation of MEWPs. There are numerous benefits of both IPAF and PASMA training courses:

  • Training courses ensure that operators are competent to safely use a scissor lift or cherry picker.
  • It guarantees the safety of both the MEWP operator and those working on site.
  • Training provides the skills and knowledge required to recognise potential hazards. Our training courses raise awareness of hazards, arming attendees with the ability to create a rescue plan that can be actioned in case of emergency.
  • IPAF and PASMA courses provide a solid foundation for machinery use. Having the knowledge to familiarise yourself with a machine and being qualified to carry out pre-inspection checks is important to help avoid the chance of risks occurring.

How MEWP Training Limits Risks in The Workplace

Trained operators have the knowledge to identify potential hazards when operating an access platform. As with any type of machinery, there is a risk involved when operating cherry pickers and scissor lifts and this could result in damage or injury. It's therefore crucial to be fully trained in the operation of MEWPs to be able to safely operate the machine, recognise risks and know how to act during emergency situations.

Training FAQs

You may have a few questions before booking onto an IPAF or PASMA training course. From whether it’s a legal requirement to undertake training before operating a MEWP to knowing when to renew your IPAF cards, you’ll find all the answers to your questions in our training FAQs

What is PASMA training?

PASMA also known as Prefabricated Access Suppliers’ and Manufacturers’ Association, offers training in safety-related guidance for the mobile access tower industry. PASMA provides best practice guidance and industry-standard training so those working on access towers are equipped with the knowledge to meet regulations and safety standards.

What is IPAF training?

IPAF training has been developed by the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF). IPAF courses ensure industry professionals can meet the legal requirements to operate access platforms, and are able to do so safely. These courses provide the theoretical and practical knowledge that is needed to operate a MEWP safely before work commences in real life applications.

What training and qualifications do MEWP operators need?

The Work at Height Regulations 2005 state that individuals are required by law to be able to demonstrate the completion of appropriate training before operating an access platform. IPAF and PASMA courses are generally considered the industry-standard training as these courses are designed to enhance knowledge, minimise health and safety risks and ensure operators understand how to control a MEWP safely.

Any person responsible for operating or inspecting a MEWP must undertake some form of training, and an IPAF course is often recommended. For those working with any non-powered access platforms, such as scaffolding, you will want to consider a PASMA course.

Who delivers powered access training?

You should always work with an approved provider to deliver an IPAF and PASMA training course, as this will ensure it is taught by a qualified professional. Operators are able to access both IPAF and PASMA training through Horizon Platforms, as we are an approved and accredited training provider.

How frequently do you need to renew IPAF and PASMA training?

Both PASMA and IPAF certificates are valid for five years, but there is the option to renew them before the expiry date. The renewal test takes around half a day to complete, and to be able to take the renewal test an operator must have an up-to-date log book with a minimum of 60 entries, with at least 10 logs recorded in the past 12 months.

As new regulations, guidance and best practices are developed and training courses are added to on a continuous basis, these renewal training courses ensure operators can still operate MEWPs safely whilst meeting new regulations.
