IPAF Instructor Training FAQs

What does IPAF stand for?

IPAF stands for the International Powered Access Federation. It is an organisation dedicated to promoting the safe and effective use of powered access equipment such as cherry pickers and scissor lifts

What is an IPAF Instructor?

An IPAF Instructor is a person qualified to give IPAF-accredited training. IPAF Instructors must have at least 36 months of MEWP operating experience, have held an IPAF Operating Licence for six months and an IPAF Demonstrator Licence for three months, and be MEWPs for Managers-qualified.

What are the duties of an IPAF Instructor?

A qualified IPAF Instructor is able to deliver accredited IPAF Training, including IPAF Operator Courses, and IPAF Demonstrator Courses.

Why should I take an IPAF Instructor Course?

Following the successful completion of our IPAF Instructor Course, you will be licensed to train others in using MEWPs such as cherry pickers and scissor lifts safely.

It is the law that anyone who operates a MEWP must be fully trained to do so. Employers must provide this training per the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations Act 1998.

As such, if your company regularly uses powered access equipment, having employees trained as IPAF Instructors can be beneficial as you will no longer have to outsource IPAF Operator Training.

How do I become an IPAF instructor?

To be a recognised IPAF Instructor, you must first complete the necessary training and obtain the correct licences.

An Instructor Course is seen as one of the most advanced courses to complete, as you must first complete Operator Training, Demonstrator Training and MEWP for Managers Courses.

Embarking on this training allows you to gain a deeper understanding of not only how to operate powered access platforms, but how to do so safely and teach others to follow the same processes.

What does an IPAF Instructor Course involve?

During your IPAF Instructor Course, you will have four days of in-person training that will cover both your understanding of the MEWPs as well as your ability to pass that understanding on. You will then be assessed over the course of a day by an IPAF examiner. You will then have three further days of IPAF mentoring to ensure your teaching techniques are effective.

What is the difference between a MEWPs for Managers Course and an IPAF Instructor Course?

The IPAF Instructor Training Course is more intensive than a MEWPs for Managers Course and has strict entry requirements. This means that to qualify for the course, you’ll need to have had a MEWP operating experience for 36 months, an IPAF Operator Licence for a minimum of six months and an IPAF Demonstrator Licence for at least three months.

Over the five-day IPAF Training Course, you’ll not only need to demonstrate competence with operating MEWPs but also demonstrate elements of First Aid Training. The full course will take up to 13 days and require you to perform sufficiently in each designated area.
