What is a Push Around Vertical Platform?

Are you on the lookout for a mobile elevating work platform for your next project? The chances are you’re comparing various types of MEWP; and, while there are many to consider, here, we’re going to take a closer look at ‘Push Around Vertical Platforms’.

An introduction to push around vertical platforms

A push around vertical platform, commonly referred to simply as a PAV or push around is a small lift that is pushed around manually and is designed to offer a safe way of working at low-level height. As the name suggests, they’re designed to elevate users in a vertical direction.

What is the safe working load of a push around platform?

Notably, unlike some other types of mobile elevating work platform, like cherry pickers and scissor lifts, which have larger safe working loads (SWL), PAVs are on the smaller side. For instance, our range of push around platforms have SWLs ranging from 136kg to 240kg, which includes the operator and their tools and materials.

What are the key features of a push around vertical platform?

We’ve looked at what a PAV is, but what are some of the defining features of a push around vertical platform?

Manual propulsion

Unlike MEWPs that rely on self-propulsion for ground movement – such as scissor lifts and boom lifts (i.e. powered by an engine or motor) – push around vertical platforms need to be manually moved into position. Thankfully, their lightweight design makes this relatively straightforward; but, if you are going to require plenty of repositioning, you might want to consider a motored MEWP (of course, depending on the environment and surface you’re working on).

Lightweight design

PAVs are generally smaller and lighter than scissor lifts and booms, which allows them to fit seamlessly through doorways, elevators, slim aisles and be used on low load-bearing floors. Their lightweight design also helps make the machine easier to manually manoeuvre, especially when you’re navigating tight spaces or confined areas such as offices, shop floors or stock rooms.

Straightforward controls

Push around vertical platforms are designed around up and down movements – like scissor lifts – so with manual or electric controls to raise and lower the platform operating this type of machine is relatively straightforward. However, all though they are a low-level access platform and easy to use, training is required before you’re able to confidently use the MEWP; and you still need to adhere to Work at Height Regulations 2005.

Single-person capacity

Push around vertical platforms are smaller than some other common MEWPs, which can mean they’re typically designed for just one person plus tools. This is to prevent overloading and reduce the chance of accidents when working from height. The exact platform capacity should be clearly marked on the machine but be sure to consult the manufacturers manual if you’re unsure. If you can’t find the decals or manual – which you should be able to as they are required for LOLER certificates – call your hire company.

Indoor and outdoor use

Our range of push around platforms are mainly suitable for indoor use, but some models can adapt to indoor and outdoor work. What’s more, our push arounds can reach heights of more than 14m, ensuring you’re able to enjoy the reach you need.

That said, this type of MEWP is not flexible when it comes to tricky terrain: it’s important to choose an even surface to operate from to keep your platform steady and the operator safe. Otherwise, you will need a scissor lift or boom.

Quiet operation

Because the lifting mechanisms of PAVs are battery powered or wind-up, and the MEWP can be moved manually, they are quiet. This is especially useful when completing a project in an area where noise levels need to be managed, such as indoors or in a public space. Also, these lifters are environmentally friendly with zero emissions.

Low maintenance

Push around platforms are famed for their simple-yet-effective make-up, which, thankfully, means they rarely require complex maintenance. In fact, they’re designed this way: with fewer moving parts than other, more complicated MEWPs, repairs are minimal and often low-cost. That said, when hiring a PAV from Horizon Platforms, each machine will have a LOLER certificate and come with a 40-point pre-delivery inspection, ensuring safety and efficiency.

Why should you consider a push around vertical platform?

Push around vertical platforms are ideal for indoor low level work-at-height. For instance, if you’re completing lighting repairs or sprinklers checks indoors, such as within a retail or office environment, within a noise-sensitive area, or across delicate surfaces that require lightweight access equipment, this might be the best-choice MEWP.
